Summary

0:35.8	by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.
0:42.6	Iowa Senator James Grimes introduced legislation for the award during the Civil War
0:47.8	in December 1861, and President Abraham Lincoln signed it that same month.
