When I was younger, we had a dog. You did. Oh, I didn't realize that. I don't think I ever knew you when we had a dog. Oh, I didn't realize that.

I don't think I ever knew you when you had a dog.

But I didn't know you when you were a youngster,

although that that, I didn't know you when you were a child.

Youngster is a distinction that may still apply.
