I'm also looking down at a plant and it's mesmerizing.

It's the perfect spiral where each leaf is between the two other before it.

Because of this, when you look towards the center of the plant and its series of concentric

circles, your eyes and your mind fix on patterns that for generations have fascinated

indigenous people, botanists, even psychologists. They've actually

demonstrated that meditating on that spiral shape has immediate physiological effects.

The small plant is just one member of an enormous and diverse family, a Garves.

Suculants that when seen at a distance in a desert landscape might resemble a cactus,

but are most definitely not.

Gabbies are in an entirely different group of plants related more closely to lilies and asparagus.
