The cross-border controversies of these last years have focused on the undocumented human

trafficking. However, behind all this is the drug flow from Mexico into the United States.

I learned from Marianna Stasio Grady that this is a product of success by Border Patrol

and other agents of the US government DEA over many decades. You will recall that in the

20th century there was much romance connected to Colombia through the Caribbean into the United

States via Florida. Well, the successful cutting off of that route led to the Mexican cartel

strength. And now in the news are demands or suggestions or strange remarks by members

of the political class, chiefly Republican in this instance, that Mexico should be punished

by bombing Mexico or something bizarre like Osama bin Laden style military operations.
