Hi, guys.

This week's Go To is about curiosity and specifically about its natural enemies and what we can do

to protect it.

And for this Go To, I'm thinking of curiosity as the propulsion to wonder.

So, like, picture of the kid who spends the afternoon mesmerized by an ant farm.

The proudly curious include astrophysicists and actors, philosophers and coders, historians

and archaeologists.

What curiosity does not look like is me and a malfunctioning remote control or printer.

That looks like me calling my husband, who actually can gin up some curiosity about

what's gone wrong.

Modern behavioral psychologists say we are hardwired to pursue novelty.

They say that even without external incentives like food or drink, humans and animals seek

out environmental variability.

So for instance, rats explore unfamiliar sections of amazes.

Monkeys will attempt to solve puzzles, even worms display rudimentary curiosity.

And unlike hunger, curiosity does not involve a need or deficit external to the nervous system.
