Hey there and welcome back to Take One, the podcast that brings you just one shaken, not stirred page of Tomlid each day. I think just by that reference,

you probably know what today's episode is going to be about, but it begins with this incredible

discussion right in the beginning of Menachot 9a in which the rabbis talk about the process

of mixing and preparing the mincha.

As we learned, you know, meal offerings are usually mixtures.

They include flour, oil, frankincense, good things.

Now, what of these ingredients were mixed outside of the temple courtyard?

Would they become invalid?

Or could we say that just mixing something is not yet part of the temple courtyard. Would they become invalid? Or could we say that just mixing something

is not yet part of the process of preparing this offering? This is kind of a really fascinating

questions because the question is truly, you know, when does a thing become truly sanctify?

And when does a mixture reach its full potency and no surprises there,

we immediately see an argument.

Rabbi Ohanan rules that such a meal offering is invalid.

Rache Lakish says, hey man, even if it was mixed outside of the temple courtyard by non-priests,

it is still fine.

Rish Lakish explains his position by saying, look, you know, oil and frankincense are

edited to the flour, and only afterwards does the Kohen, the priest, take, you know, the mixture

to be sacrificed on the altar.

Therefore, there's really no need for a Kohen to be involved in the original mixing of the ingredients.

And therefore, everything could be done outside of the precincts of the temple, no problem.

Not so fast, says Rabbi Ohanan.
