grateful page of Talmud each day. But before I could tell you anything about today's page, Menachat 4, I'd like to tell you

a story.

I heard it from a very lovely man named Khanania.

My family hires every time we're in Israel to drive us to and from the airport.

Hanania has a beautiful large van perfect for a bunch of tall folks with lots of

luggage. And he's a smart and pious dude to boot, which makes the ride an absolute pleasure.

And the last time you were in Israel this past summer, he told me the following story while

we were stuck in terrible Tel Aviv traffic.

It's a story about Donitzhak Abhannin, the great Bible commentator, who was also a notable

financier and the Portuguese king's personal treasure. One day, the story goes, a bunch of anti-Semites

plotted against Donizhak, finding it distasteful

that a Jew should have all that money and all that power.

So they went to the king and told him that his loyal treasurer wasn't so loyal after all.

Donizhach Abarvanel, they claimed, was stealing the king's money.

Here's how you'll find out that we're right, said the plotters.

Ask Abarvanel to come up with a list of his assets and you will see that he will try to hide

most of them from you because most of what he has was stolen.

Now, the king trusted his advisor, but doubts started driving him mad, and eventually he couldn't

help himself any longer. He summoned Don Izzhach and without too much explanation, ordered

him to provide a list of everything that he owned. A few days later,
