Welcome to meet the press now. I'm Yamishal Sender in Washington, where the government

0:15.4

shutdown is set to enter a fifth week. And the consequences for tens of millions of

0:20.4

Americans across the country

0:21.8

are growing increasingly severe. Over the weekend, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced

0:26.6

that the money for the food assistance program called SNAP, formerly known as food stamps,

0:31.2

will not be distributed starting November 1st. That means some 42 million Americans who rely on

0:37.2

the program could lose their food

0:38.8

And that can happen right now if they would show some spot.

But SNAP benefits aren't the only social safety net program getting caught up in the fight over government funding.

1:08.3

WIC, the program that provides food assistance to pregnant women, new moms and young

1:12.4

children could also run out of funding if the shutdown drags on.

1:16.0

And Head Start, which provides early childhood support for low-income families, could also

1:20.1

face disruptions.

1:21.5

Meanwhile, the country's largest union representing federal workers is now ramping up pressure

1:25.7

on Congress to reopen the government and implicitly

1:28.6

calling out Democrats for not supporting a clean funding bill. In a statement today, the union's

1:33.1

president writing, quote, both political parties have made their point. And still, there is no clear

1:38.0

end in sight. It's time to pass a clean, continuing resolution and end this shutdown today.
