Today we wanted to put together an episode for you about the Hong Kong protests

and how they're being seized on here in the United States by the punditry class,

by the neo-conservative class,

by the Trump administration itself, and by all the Trump loyalists,

all while trade wars happening in the background with China, spurred on by the Trump administration.

And ultimately, all this anti-Chinese sentiment that's being created as a result of all this

being hyped up in the media is serving U.S. hegemonic interests and goals.

But we'd like to have someone on who's very informed on the situation in Hong Kong.

And that person is Sheila Shao.

Sheila is an organizer within the party for socialism and liberation.

She's also the editor of Breaking the Chains Magazine.

And she's currently teaching a class series on China.

My family is actually from mainland China. My parents immigrated to the U.S. in the late 80s.

They're from the Guangdong province, which is the province that Hong Kong used to belong to before it was taken by the British. We're from a city called Zhongsan, which is the province that Hong Kong used to belong to before it was taken by the British.

We're from a city called Zhongsan, which is pretty much a half an hour boat right away from Hong Kong,

very, very closely similar to Hong Kong.

Yeah, so it was interesting because I don't know if you all know this,

but I studied abroad in Hong Kong in 2012.

And so that was the first time I had witnessed the anti-M mainland racism that I had described

earlier against mainland Chinese people by Hong Kong locals.
