Summary

On a special edition of Essential Football, Melissa Reddy, Paul Gilmour and Lyall Thomas join Ron Walker to look ahead to Mauricio Pochettino's impending appointment as Chelsea's third manager of the Todd Boehly era.

Melissa and Paul explain the depth of the philosophy which made the Argentine such a successful figure at Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton, why he can re-energise a tired Chelsea and what he's learned from his time abroad at PSG.

With a huge squad for Pochettino to deal with this summer, Lyall charts the task he has on his hands in the upcoming transfer window, who could be on their way out at Stamford Bridge and where he will want to see investment ahead of the new season.

It's been a while since Graham Potter was shown the door at Stanford Bridge, and only now we're getting his replacement. But why is that?

1:12.4

Well, I think it's twofold. I think number one, the maybe it wasn't acknowledgement, mistakes

1:17.5

were made first time around, but also that there was no football process in place, football structure

1:24.7

in place at Chelsea at the time. Todd Bolley was acting sporting

1:28.4

director at one point interim sporting director and I think the difference this time is they wanted

1:32.5

to go through a thorough process to find the next manager. They wanted to trust their football people

1:38.0

and work together as a team to do that. There's also the fact that a number of the managers

1:41.4

involved in that process maybe wouldn't have been available until the summer that included Marizio Pocetino who was keen to come back at the start

1:49.5

of preseason that just gets you know that's most managers love to do that and start from scratch
