The politicians who thrive in the years ahead and the parties which thrive in the years ahead

are the ones that are going to be offering a compelling narrative around the theme of security,

both economic and cultural. It is not going to be either or it is not

going to be increased the salience of one, decreased the salience of the other. It is going to be

a narrative that will speak very loudly and

convincingly to Boater's desire for a much greater degree of economic security but

also a strong desire for cultural security for

protection from an array of perceived threats that they feel.

It would give me great pleasure to see Donald Trump behind us.

Trump has attacked the most fundamental aspects of America's political system, including the idea

that free and fair elections should determine who gets to be in office.

It is evidence that he has gone to the very limits of what is legally permissible in all kinds of circumstances for many years and well beyond the

limits of what should be morally acceptable. And there's always some satisfaction in seeing the application of a noble and hard-won principle that all men are equal before the law that nobody is exempt from its reach.

And yet I saw the breaking news alert about Trump's indictment and had a sinking feeling.

For the last months, the best case scenario was slowly coming into view.

Trump's ability to command the attention of the public was having it looked at least plausible

that he might lose his bit for the Republican nomination he seemed determined to make a quixotic bit to run for

presidency as an independent. I was starting to hope that he may leave American politics and American history as a triple loser.

Now all of the attention is back on Trump just as he wants it to be.
