Summary

BONUS. Matt Rutherford has been on the podcast more than anyone else in our 230+ episodes, and his stories are always epic. What follows is a presentation Matt did in Toronto in January at the boat show there about his Around the America's voyage on the 27' Albin Vega 'St Brendan.' Matt's told this story before on the podcast, but he's so damn good at it that I never tire of listening to it, and you can always learn something new from him. I'm also playing this as a bonus episode this week because Matt just launched his own podcast - aptly titled 'Single-Handed' - so I encourage you to check that out for more of his incredible adventures. And be sure to check out Matt's updated oceanresearchproject.org website.

Hey guys, quick pre-intro here, a couple things to talk about. First of all, we opened up a new passage on East Bjorn for 2018. The very last passage of the year, we only have one cruise space left on it. It's the last cruise space for 2018. We're sailing from Lagosch on the south coast of Portugal, out to Madeira and back again. It's 500 miles each way. We'll spend a

0:22.6

couple days in Madeira exploring ashore, cruising along the coast a little bit if we have some time,

0:28.4

and then it's 500 miles back to Lagos. So go to 59-north.com slash offshore to sign up for the very last

0:36.2

cruise base of 2018. And also I am going to help

0:40.4

a friend promote a sale for cancer campaign. Chris Stanmore Major, who was on the podcast a few

0:46.6

weeks back, his business called Spartan Ocean Racing, basically does what we do on East

0:51.8

Bjorn, but with ex-volvo 60 boats and more of a racing focus than a cruising focus.

But anyway, they're going to be in England doing this sale for cancer campaign, and they're raising money to help take kids with cancer out sailing for day sales and stuff in England.

1:07.3

So they want your help.

1:09.0

We have supported them, and I encourage you to do the same.

1:12.1

A couple ways to find them. Go to Facebook.com slash Spartan Ocean Racing, or you can go to

1:18.1

GoFundMe.com slash Spartan Sale for Cancer. So if you just go to Gofundme.com and search Spartan

1:25.9

sale for cancer, they're trying to raise $25,000

1:29.0

so they can take a bunch of kids out sailing in England. So far, they're at $3,000. So please

1:35.9

donate to them if you want to. Obviously, I have a deep connection with this kind of stuff.

1:41.6

My mom died from brain cancer in 2012. So if we were there on

1:46.3

East Pier and we'd be doing this right there next to them. So I'm going to support them and I

1:50.7

would like you too as well. Again, go to gofundme.com and search for Spartan sale for cancer.

1:57.1

There also is a link to that in the show notes for today's episode.

2:01.6

Okay, thanks.
