Summary

Rob is in good company in this episode where he and ex-premier league footballer Matt talk openly and honestly about some very controversial topics. They talk about what was behind Matt losing his job at Sky, Covid, why free speech is in danger from cancel culture and corruption as well as Matt’s career and how the world of football has changed. KEY TAKEAWAYS Matt worked with Sky for 15 years after retiring from football. He was ‘let go’ and wasn’t given a definitive reason but he believes it was due to the controversial opinions he sometimes expressed. One of these controversial opinions was when Matt refused to wear a BLM badge on air. The reason Matt was against wearing a BLM badge is because he didn’t agree with de-funding the police and the suspicions around where and how donations were being spent. He told the producers he would have supported any other anti racist charity, just not this one. Rob and Matt agree that since 2020, the world has become a very scary place; mostly due to the restrictions on free speech. Contrasted to the beginning of his media career, Matt is saddened by how careful you have to be about what you say now. Matt wouldn’t change anything he has done or said in the past. He is glad he has spoken out each and every time. He has found since being fired by Sky he feels ‘free’, to do and say as he wants. The people who made the lockdown rules, the government, didn’t follow them. If you still trust in them and listen to them than Matt thinks you need to think again. You have to start resisting, not playing ball and when the next votes come along voting for a party that isn’t the main two. The news of Elon Musk buying twitter has divided Rob and Matt somewhat. Rob finds the concept exciting but Matt is wary of the current censorship and doesn’t believes this will truly change under Elon. The lack of accountability that the journalists have had the past couple of years’ shocks Matt. They haven’t held the people in power to account, the media and the government together have been complicit in what has happened in the past two years. The media should be on the side of the people in a free society. Propaganda is rife in the western world right now. Here in the UK with Covid, statistics and experts were used to lie to people. Rules were made to coerce people into certain behaviour and each day more and more information comes out about how the public were lied to. A lot has changed in football since Matt retired. He believes that players should be able to play with a sense of enjoyment and at the end of the day it is just a game, not life and death. It should be about entertainment and joy not stress and fame. The internet has changed the way footballers live their lives. Like many celebrities and anyone in the public eye, they are constantly watched and judged for everything to do and their lives are on show 24/7. This adds a tremendous amount of stress and pressure to be on their best behaviour constantly.   BEST MOMENTS “These days it appears spreading facts gets you into trouble” “I find it incredibly scary and I don’t want to end up living in a world that is what I perceive to be a communist regime which is why I speak out” “We’re at a crossroads right now, we are very close we have to decide which way we want to go down as a society” “The only way you could really make a difference is to turn their votes away from the two main parties” “You have to keep shining a light on the truth because lies can only hide for so long” “The world has got to chill out a bit, have a laugh, stop getting offended by stupid sh*t”   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks  rob.team  ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Matt, what do you think you lost your job at Sky after nearly 20 years?

0:16.1

I think it was probably a combination of a couple of things. I think the direction of the

0:21.3

company we're going in in terms of diversity and that kind of stuff was probably one of the reasons.

0:30.9

I don't think I've made myself particularly popular with my stance on not wearing a

0:37.6

black lives matter badge on the television and also for my social media post questioning the

0:46.2

the ridiculousness of lockdowns. So why didn't you wear a black lives matter badge?

0:52.2

I didn't feel comfortable while I actually did wear it for one show because we were

0:57.3

we were told we had to pretty much had to wear it otherwise you know it wouldn't be very good

1:03.0

for us if we didn't and we were told that about us a minute before we were due to go on air

the black lives matter organisation and I wasn't particularly enamored with what I saw

and I didn't agree with what they stood for so I felt very uncomfortable wearing that badge

1:29.2

and so I made my point clear to the producer after the show that that would be the last time I

1:35.9

would wear it. I would be prepared to wear any other anti-racism badge and I don't think that

1:44.6

probably went down too well with the with the big bosses and I don't think the the the fact

1:53.6

that I was going against the mainstream narrative probably did me any favours either.

I was talking to Nigel Farage a few weeks ago and he told me some stuff about black lives matter

2:05.5

that I didn't understand about how it was run and what it was about so what is it about

that you don't like. I think it was the the whole defunding the police side of things didn't
