This is part 5 of a 7-part The Keys to Genuine Contentment, Episodes 1942-1949.

THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE:

Practice a meditation technique for at least 5 minutes a day to manage a top stressor you're experiencing in your life.

A DIFFERENT MEDITATION TECHNIQUE EVERY DAY FOCUSED ON A WEEKLY THEME:

You are guided with a different meditation technique every day that is customized for the week's theme. Weave the techniques into the most stressful times of your day to manage difficult emotions. I had a terrible cold. I still have it and I completely lost my voice. I hope you enjoyed the recorded meditations.

My husband was able to do for you and I want to tell you that I really missed not recording those episodes and I realized how much I do enjoy sharing meditation with you.

I hope your week is going well. How are you doing this week of virtues?

0:49.0

This week I have been focusing on the virtue of patience and that is the virtue focus for today.

1:01.0

As I've recovered from this cold, I had to allow myself to just relax and do nothing.

1:14.0

This is really difficult for me to do. Usually when I'm sick I still have times throughout the day where I have a little energy and can get up and move around.

1:24.0

But this time I really have felt pretty horrible the entire time. I'm coming out of my illness but as you can hear my voice is still recovering.

1:38.0

So as you focus on the virtue of patience, I want to share with you something I read just about an hour ago and I thought it was so ideal for our series and today's virtue focus.

This is from Saint Francis des Salves. I hope that is how you pronounce his name. He was the Bishop of Geneva. He was born in the year 1567 and he is honored as a saint in the Catholic church.

2:14.0

He is noted for his deep faith and his gentle approach to the religious divisions in his land which happened during the Protestant Reformation in Geneva.

2:28.0

He wrote extensively and there are many famous quotes attributed to him. I'm pretty new to Saint Francis des Salves but I wanted to share with you this ideal quote on patience.

2:43.0

This is in regard to cultivating proper desires within our hearts. He says, do not long after things, a far off such as cannot happen till a distant time.

3:00.0

As some do who buy this means wear themselves out and expend their energies uselessly, fostering a dangerous spirit of distraction.

3:14.0

If a young man gives way to presumptuous longings for an employment, he cannot obtain yet. What good will it do him?

3:25.0

If I crave to buy my neighbor's estate but he is not willing to sell it, is it not a mere waste of time?

3:36.0

If, when sick, I am restlessly anxious to preach or celebrate or visit other sick people or generally to do work befitting the strong, is it not an unprofitable desire in as much as I have no power to fulfill it?

3:57.0

Meanwhile, these useless wishes take the place of such as I ought to have namely to be patient, resigned, self-denying, obedient, gentle under-suffering.

4:12.0

When you have done this, your wishes will be fulfilled in their time and so you will not waste time in unprofitable wishes, not that I would have you lose any good desires but rather treat them methodically, putting them aside in one corner of your heart till due time comes while you carry out such as a ripe for action.

4:41.0

I certainly felt this way when I was sick this week. I wanted to do so many things but I couldn't and so I resigned myself to relax and take care and my husband was able to record the meditations for you which was a new experience for you and for me and for him as well.

5:09.0

This quote meant a lot to me when they talk about the young man wanting to be successful already without having to go through the hard work and skill set to gain the type of job you want.

5:28.0

Because we have two college-age sons who complain about college because they say that there are so many jobs now where you don't need to go to college, they want to start working right away.
