I'm excited to welcome on Tyler Austin Harper, who's an assistant professor of environmental

studies at Bates College and a contributing writer at the Atlantic where he wrote a piece that caught

our attention called Pollyamory and the ruling class's latest fad. Tyler, welcome to the podcast.

So, Tyler, tell me a little bit, this is a world that I don't know too well, although I do live in Brooklyn,

which apparently is like ground zero for this kind of phenomenon.

What are you responding to in this article?

Yeah, so at the end of 2023 around December and then the beginning of this year, there was

kind of a glut of New York media attention on polyamory. It started, you know, there was a New Yorker

article that was, in part, addressing a forthcoming book by Molly wrote in Winter, who wrote a book called More

about polyamory. And then there was just a slew of other articles. New York Magazine ran an entire

spread on polyamory that was part an interview with a bunch of polyamorous, but was also a how-to

guide in case you were interested in polyamory. And just the sudden media obsession with

it felt really interesting to me, particularly because it was largely focused on wealthy, upwardly

mobile, heterosexual people in Brooklyn and other neighborhoods in New York. And so I, you know,

I was largely responding to that. I started reading
