The American economy after the remarks by Jerome Powell, the chairman of the Federal Reserve.

The inflation number is critical. The job's number is critical, but more importantly,

it's what the Fed believes is coming at us. For the last year, the Federal Reserve and its

economists have spoken very carefully of an imminent recession. Following the remarks by Mr. Powell

last week, suddenly the Federal Reserve now says America will avoid a recession. I welcome Elizabeth

Peak, colonist at the Hill, colonist at Fox News, much on Fox Business. There's a very good

even to that. Quiet remark by the Federal Reserve. Something you've anticipated for months. Where's

the recession? Where's the recession? We weren't ready to be completely iconoclastic and declared

the Fed had bad numbers, but it was puzzling that we were not seeing a recession in some of the

metrics that you can follow. Hotel occupancy or travel or consumer spending, and now the Federal

Reserve is called it off. The puzzle I have for you is, is that good news? Do we believe there's

no recession now? Good evening to you, Liz. Good evening. I believe that nobody knows, John,

and I think that's kind of where the Fed is, too. The reason that they're so shy about signaling

what lies ahead is because I actually genuinely believe they don't know. Remember that monetary policy,

monetary tightening, leads the economy by 18 months to two years even. So I think the Fed is

watching to see what its very aggressive rate hiking cycle is going to lead to in terms of economic
