Summary

At our recent offline Gathering, Mark Vernon - former AnglicanĀ Priest, turned atheist, turned Christian agnostic - led us in a Buddhist inspiredĀ meditation. To get the full benefit from this, you might want to sit near some other people (e.g. in a cafe, the library, or park, etc.) as it's all about how we perceive ourselves in relation to others.Ā

If you want more from Nomad, check out our website, and follow us on Facebook and twitter

If you're looking for other people to share this journey with, then register on our Listener Map, and see if any other nomads are in your area.Ā

Nomad can only keep going because a small group of faithful listeners help us pay the bills. If you want to join them, you can make regular donations at Patreon or a one-off or regular donation through PayPal, the links to which you can find on our support page.

As a thank you, you'll have access to Nomad Book Club, our online community The Beloved Listener Lounge, and Nomad Devotionals, where we're attempting to reconstruct worship through a creative mix of songs, music, readings, prayers and guest reflections.

But I thought we might try to do just a five-minute meditation that I hope might give you a felt sense of this skeptic idea about living on the edge of the circle.

0:58.0

Do you remember the idea that inside the circle is what you think you know?

1:02.0

Outside the circle is what's less known, unknown, and the art of living is to live on the edge of the circle.

1:09.0

And so I thought what we might try and do is use the fact that we're gathering

1:14.3

where there's lots of people we don't know.

1:16.5

Maybe some people you do know who you've come with, but a lot of people you don't know,

1:19.8

and see whether we can incorporate that into a sort of meditation that takes us to this balance

1:25.6

between what we think we do know and what we don't know.

1:28.3

So it's just going to be five minutes or so, and maybe like two or three steps.

1:34.3

So trust me.

1:37.0

And we'll see what happens.

1:38.3

See what happens.

1:38.9

See what happens. So if you do meditate, then you just sit comfortably,

1:45.0

you know, a bit more of an upright position,

1:47.0

a bit better, feet on the ground probably,

1:50.0

and shut your eyes or maybe just look down a bit.

1:54.0

Certainly look down actually, that's part of the meditation.
