Disatisfaction, it's an innate part of our psychology.

There's no amount of money or success or love that you're ever going to achieve

where you're like, cool, I'm done, I got it.

I always felt self help had gotten to, you know,

just be positive.

There needed to be a correction, a little bit more pessimism.

And so the book is all about how we need to be very careful of what we hope for.

This blind faith in our hopes that actually causes all these problems in the first place.

But research shows that more than half of

the population who have mental health needs and are actually receiving the

treatment they need. So I think there's something about this moment in the world

people are overly anxious, overly upset,

and they understand that they're more anxious

and upset than they should be about things.

Even though we are smarter, safer, healthier, better off in most ways than we were 20, 30 years ago.

Emotionally, we are desperately clawing for a sense of meaning or a sense of hope.
