A square-jord man strides toward the pulpit of Zurich's grand cathedral.

The man's name is Ulrich Zwingli.

Christ alone is our justification.

So our good works, if they are of Christ, are good.

But if they are of ourselves, they are neither right nor good.

Zwingli was born less than two months after Martin Luther,

born January the 1st, 1484, in Vildhaus, Switzerland.

Like Luther, he received a fine Renaissance education.

He was ordained a priest in 1506, and at first was a beautiful follower of the Church's teaching.

But then, as a fiercely independent Swiss patriot, Zwingli began to question the authority of the Pope over the Swiss cantons.

Even as a child, if anyone upgraded or slandered a Swiss,

I resisted them and even ran into danger on that account.

For anyone who dishonors the Swiss, dishonors me.

Then he became chaplain to a Swiss regiment.

And when he saw what they were fighting for, he was furious.

The Swiss soldiers he was ministering to had been hired to expand the fatal states in Italy.

Zwingli was angry at the Pope for his greed,

but also at the Swiss authorities who had hired out their young men as mercenaries.

The Battle of Marignano in 1515 was a turning point in Zwingli's life.

He watched as cannon fired tore through the tightly massed ranks of the Swiss.
