So it's been a while since we've had Mark sign on and I really wanted to get a chance to talk to him take a temperature on all this craziness in the offseason that we just saw the quiet trade this market that it was maybe even more restrictive than a lot of people might have thought.

So I guess we can start with this market of just what were so the bigger surprises to you of this offseason.

Look, I think you got it if we're going to talk surprises you have to start with cousins still for me.

That was a shocker seeing Kawaii traded of course there's shock value in that but the reality is we've been building up to a Kawaii trade for weeks now you could even say months now I mean this thing has just been trending in the wrong direction for so long that maybe okay Toronto kind of we only had a week to digest the fact that they were really trying to get this thing done but Kawaii being treated so well.

But Kawaii being traded ultimately I don't know that we can classify that as a just jaw dropping surprise but what about the destination for Kawaii was a I mean they were not talked about as being part of this but I think a big part of that to me was that you know the spurs really didn't seem to want the things that team traditionally want in these superstar trades.

Yeah I was in Vegas I'd say I got to Vegas let's say I think I got to Vegas eight days before the trade I was in Vegas for three days and heard a lot of derosen for Kawaii chatter but there was a lot of skepticism when you talk to people with other teams and oh Toronto is not really going to do that oh no the spurs won't really that's not going to be enough for them but yeah there's no question the destination I mean Toronto as I said they did kind of move up quick in terms of becoming a favorite.

And ultimately getting it done but you know the spurs did you know some people will paint it as an exile that if they're you know they sent Kawaii to the east and they sent him to a as chilly a locale as they could muster I'm sure some people will see that way the spurs will obviously will obviously see say no that's not why we did it we did it because we wanted an all star back and we got an all star back and derosen but I think if you really study the spurs you're not you're not shocked that that's the trade that they did.

So I think that actually kind of fits in with even what their MO has been the last couple of years before moving on with go I kind of lower ceiling moves let's just kind of stay in contention we can't take a step back you know not really high risk high reward you know we're going to get good vets who are going to execute who are going to be good in the regular season and then you know do they match up with golden state you know kind of questionable so I guess if you really start to think about it and then I guess the other question is I think that's the same thing.

Question two is and I want to get back to what you're saying about cousins by the way but the other question to is you know what was really there from the Lakers from Philly from Boston where they just were real offers made by those teams and the spurs were interested or did those teams just never even really get to the point.

I think there were real offers from all of them yeah but they wanted to rose they wanted an all star they wanted at least one proven piece now if we're going to talk surprises by all accounts Philly has not been willing to move faults that does surprise me based on what happened last year maybe that backs up the recent chatter that you know he's made some some strides this summer and is looking better it is convinced the sixers that all the ills that plagued him last season that he can get past that.

Because you would have thought as nightmarish as his rookie season was that they wouldn't hesitate to move faults so maybe the sixers know something there that we don't see yet but none of those teams clearly could could put up or were willing to put a player into the deal as good as derose and that was the clincher because obviously the pick that the spurs got in this trade is not amazing.

So that's another valuable piece in this thing but you know from San Antonio's perspective this was about getting an all star back and they did yeah it's just surprising to me I mean they can't think that they're actually you know going to be competing for the Western conference championship with this team but maybe this is just a present to Greg pop of it just he goes into his sunset years and I guess maybe a present to himself since you know he probably still has the ultimate decision making there.

co-ye or co-ye with his next team you have to say co-ye's closer even with Toronto and then who knows what he's going to do in free agency but having watched the spurs a long time they've they've gone to the lottery twice and look what we'll look what they came out of it with they got Robinson and Duncan and I think they know how

ridiculously fortunate they are to have done that twice so it makes sense that I think they don't want to strip it down and go full rebuild because just you know I'm no math ways but they're not going to they're probably not going to get Duncan or Robinson the next time they go into the lottery
