Summary

Marc Lamont Hill grew up in Philly playing basketball with Kobe Bryant. They were on different planets even then but Marc learned a lot about him in the hundreds of times they faced off. They went in different paths but stayed friends and Marc became more than just one of the coolest intellectuals in America, he became a basketball expert who thinks of himself as Mr. 76ers. He sits front row at every home game. Marc is an amazing brother who I’ve known and loved for many years and it was amazing to sit and talk with him about basketball and Kobe and everything else. We had this conversation weeks ago, before Kobe was suddenly and tragically killed, and you can hear Marc’s respect for his old friend coming through. Like what we do? You. You played ball with Kobe in high school. I've played Kobe in high school. I've played Kobe in my life 200 times. Never beat him. Never beat him. Never beat him. That might seem like a big deal, but when you play a game like that where you got you got the ball first and all you got to do is score you think I'd win one.

Some. But he took this so serious. He had a level of like obsession with winning and

0:34.3

discipline about it. I remember one day I came with a gym and he was shooting free

throws left-handed. You will never need a left-handed free throw.

And then I remember it was in the middle of his career

and he broke his hand in the middle of a play.

0:47.2

And he shot the free throw left-handed.

The idea that he was preparing for some shit that the rest of us couldn't even imagine but the idea that he was

0:56.7

imagining a moment like that and the fact that he was willing to work an extra hour or two just in case that one moment happened was a testament to his discipline and his commitment as a basketball player and what I'm saying is that as intellectual that level of commitment and discipline is also there.
