Summary

Today we take on News Corp., the most egregious example of “manufactured consent.” The fact that we let this monster from down under invade our thought space and contaminate the discourse in this nation is a crime. Rupert Murdoch’s companies have made us dumber, angrier and more susceptible to conspiracies. Of this there can be no doubt. To reveal how he accomplished this, we’ll travel through a brief history of American media, discuss the legislation at the center of the disaster that is our media, and place our polarized news landscape in its proper context. The pivot centerpoint of our feature is 1996. Max also introduces two new themes into the show and addresses listener feedback to the Fuck Milton Friedman episode during show notes. #FMF #FRM

Well, interestingly, the term, the phrase, manufacturing consent, was not ours.

0:06.8

We borrowed it from the leading public intellectual of the 20th century, Walter Lipman.

He said, that's a new art in democracy to manufacture consent so that the ignorant and meddlesome outsiders, his phrase, the population,

will be passive and acquiescent and will accept the rule of the responsible men, people like us.

And in fact, the myth is that the media are independent, adversarial, courageous,

struggling against power.

0:44.5

And it's actually true of some, the very fine, often very fine reporters, correspondents.

0:51.4

In fact, the media does an honest, courageous job, but within a framework that

0:57.0

determines what to discuss, what not to discuss, and what we try to demonstrate in the book

1:05.0

is that if you simply look at the institutional structure of the media within a state capitalist society like ours,

1:14.2

they're performing it pretty much the way you'd expect.

1:17.4

There can be no other opening for this show than to hear from the great Noam Chomsky,

1:22.2

the most consistent practical humanist in the Western world. On this, I offer no equivocation. There's a good chance

1:29.1

that unfuckers have heard the phrase manufacturing consent, the title of Chomsky's landmark book,

1:33.8

based upon the phrase first uttered by Walter Lipman, as you heard in the clip. But there's never a
