Summary

Grant has an intriguing conversation with Tom Statham (34:34), a longtime Manchester United academy coach who has worked with Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and many other players when they were eight years old and seen them go on to do great things. Statham also hosts the Go Play Soccer Podcast which explores the topic of coaching young players so they can develop while still having fun with the sport. Statham also has extensive U.S. connections and explains his history with the sport in these parts. Before that Grant and Chris Wittyngham break down the soccer weekend, including Chelsea's 1-0 win over Man City in the men's UEFA Champions League final, the history-making Christian Pulisic, the USMNT's 2-1 loss at Switzerland, this week's Concacaf Nations League finals and Inter Miami's severe sanctions from MLS as the result of its massive cheating scandal breaking the league's roster rules. Hey there! Welcome to Football with Grant Wall. Thanks so much for joining me. Today's interview

0:12.0

guest is Tom Statham, a long time Manchester United Academy coach with US ties. We've

0:18.9

had some great guests lately, including Caroline Graham Hanson, Matthew Hoppy and Alejandro

0:24.9

Yerara Goury, so check those out. But first, let's talk some soccer with my friend Chris

0:30.9

Winningham, who you can hear on Univision, Inter Miami Radio, the damn Levitard show, and

0:37.7

the Chelsea Mike podcast. Chris, thanks for joining me. How are you?

0:41.8

Doing all right, Grant, how are you, sir?

0:43.2

Doing okay! Quite a soccer weekend. Chelsea won Man City Nail, Kai Hoverts with a game

0:49.5

winner. Christian Polizzi becomes the first US men's national team player to play in

0:54.1

and win the Champions League final. And Pep Guardiola missed out on another chance to

1:01.0

win the Champions League. Your thoughts?

1:04.2

Well, there's so many. My kind of prevailing thought was, so obviously there's two kind

1:09.4

of decisions that were analyzed with Pep, not playing a Holy Midfielder. And look, when

1:14.6

the goal is scored because there's a gaping space in the middle of the pitch, it'd be nice

1:17.7

if there was someone who was kind of accustomed to playing there. And then the other was Kevin

1:21.3

DeBroina playing up top and then eventually getting injured and coming off. That was kind

1:25.1

of another talking point. And Pep's decisions were analyzed. But I think that Chelsea might

1:32.2

have handled City even if there was a Holy Midfielder. And even if Kevin DeBroina was

1:37.6

playing somewhere else, they've got a formula. It's work three times now. And we thought

1:42.4

the first two times it was because City made all these changes after playing in Champions

1:47.3

League. And because they weren't taking the games at seriously and look at the lineups

1:51.0

ago, that's not going to reflect what the final is going to be like. And then the final
