Summary

Did you know that about 40% of family caregivers are men? In this special episode Justin Baldoni joins Caring Across Generations’ co-director Ai-jen Poo, former NFL star Devon Still, actor Nathan Kress, author & comedian Zach Anner and long-term care expert Robert Espinoza for a vulnerable, empathetic and uplifting exploration of caregiving. By opening up about their experiences giving and receiving care, they invite us to be a part of building a culture of care: where caregiving is considered a strength, and the work of care is valued, compensated, and supported. Hello and we are bringing you a very special

0:17.9

episode of Man Enough today. A few years ago I had a great honor of sitting down with my dear friend Igen poo from

0:26.8

carrying across generations and a group of really special men to talk about caregiving. And in honor of National Caregiving Day we wanted to

0:35.8

re-release bring back that episode that was video only for our podcast audience

0:42.3

because one of the things we just do not talk about enough is

0:46.1

caregiving especially as it relates to masculinity. Yeah this was the first thing that that we worked on together and I felt really excited that you were involved in this conversation.

1:00.0

When you Google a caregiver, when we think about, I mean just portray also caregiving even in the media and television and film,

1:08.0

it's very often women.

1:10.0

And obviously the burden of caregiving does fall onto women in so many different ways in our society and then we devalue it for that reason.

1:20.0

In fact, 40% of men I believe the number is are caregivers but don't won't allow themselves to be called caregivers as if

1:30.0

Caregiving is emasculating, if that, right?

1:34.7

As if that's like, like makes us less of a man.

1:39.8

When in reality, I think that being aiver is is probably one of the most human things that we can do.

1:46.6

I mean some of the data that we came across was yeah very very

1:51.5

sort of striking and so it's one more sort of argument right to bring men on board when it comes to fighting for gender equality when it comes to fighting against these

2:00.8

patriarchal notions that caregiving is you know feminine or is negative or is not

2:06.8

important when yeah it robs men of the beauty of that right? We've had so many guests, male guests, talk about how caregiving, right?

2:16.0

Like, caring for their children, doing things like the laundry, doing things like the dishes,

2:22.0

right? These are ways of loving other people. It's ways of

2:25.5

connecting with other people. So we're all robbing ourselves of that when we, yeah, when

2:31.0

you believe in these patriarchal, capitalistic notions that somehow caregiving is below anyone.

2:38.0

I have a father who's a caregiver, I have a brother is Down syndrome.
