Summary

This lecture was given on April 9th 2022 at The Dominican House of Studies as part of the intellectual retreat "Faith Seeking Understanding" For more information on upcoming events, please visit our website at www.thomisticinstitute.org. About the Speaker: Dr. Matthew J. Dugandzic joined the theology faculty at St. Mary’s Seminary & University in 2019 after completing a Ph.D. in moral theology at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Dr. Dugandzic’s scholarship focuses on medieval thought, especially Thomas Aquinas’s anthropology, psychology, and ethics. His current research focuses on the sources that Aquinas used in developing his understanding of virtue and on recovering ancient and medieval wisdom regarding economics in order to apply this wisdom to contemporary financial problems. Dr. Dugandzic also holds a BSc in biology from Concordia University in Montréal, Québec and an MA in religious studies from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, New York. In addition to his work in the academy, Dr. Dugandzic has also brought his theological expertise to the aid of the Church, having taught theology to RCIA groups, catechists, and candidates for the permanent diaconate.

Like Father Cutty, I'll break the fourth wall right off the bat and tell you that I was never a Baptist or not Catholic.

0:23.4

I've been a cradle Catholic, but I was a materialist.

0:33.7

And as Father Jonah mentioned, I did study biology in my undergraduate studies. And before that,

0:37.5

my education was very science-focused. So I was a materialist. I had a very difficult time believing in anything immaterial. And what that meant was that for me, I had some people

0:43.7

asked, the reason I mentioned this, because some people asked yesterday to Father Cutty,

0:47.7

who doubts this? And the answer is that 10 years ago, I would have. I would have doubted,

0:54.0

not the whole God stuff, that made

0:55.4

perfect sense, but actually the idea that we could really know things and the idea that we

1:00.8

had free will. It all seemed deterministic to me. So the talk that I've prepared is called

1:05.9

man as knowing animal because the theme of the conference is faith and reason, and you have to begin with

1:13.2

what is most known to you before you move on to what is harder to understand. You start with

1:17.6

those things that are natural to us. So I start with reason, and then I talk about faith in the

1:24.0

next talk. And what I want to do in particular is really give you some of the theory that is behind

1:29.4

a lot of what Father Cuddy was talking about.

1:33.5

Because maybe some of you did have doubts about it, maybe you didn't, but I guarantee you

1:39.3

that if you go around talking about this, you will encounter people who do.

1:43.2

But even if that's not the case, it's still important to come to a correct understanding of what we're talking about this, you will encounter people who do. But even if that's not the case,

1:44.8

it's still important to come to a correct understanding of what we're talking about. So I want

1:48.9

to explain the theory behind that, and then that'll also help us see what kind of mistakes

1:55.6

people make that cause them to doubt the things that Father Qadi was talking about. So, as I was preparing this for you, I was thinking to myself that these, you were all in college,
