My fifth grade teacher was a man.

My sixth grade teacher was a man.

The rest of the teachers at my parochial elementary school were women, but it was not unusual at all

to have men on staff in the elementary school and have a place, a long place, careers in the classroom.

Not so much anymore. Why is that and how has it changed education itself?

Welcome back to Issues, Et etc. I'm Todd Wilkin,

joining us to talk about male attrition from elementary school teaching. Dr. Scott Yenner, he's

professor of political science at Boise State University, senior director of state coalitions at the

Claremont Institute Center for the American Way of Life. He's author of the book, The Recovery of Family

Left Elementary Schools and Won't Go Back. Dr. Yenner, welcome back.

Thanks for having me on. What do the numbers tell us about male attrition from

elementary school teaching? When I was born in 1970, over 30% of teachers in K through 6 were males.

I'm a child of the 80s, so I would say that I had three male teachers under the age of sixth grade.

Today that number is 11%. So there's been a mass exodus of men
