New drugs cost a lot to develop.

It takes many, many highly educated and talented

people working for decades to bring a new drug to market. And the vast majority don't make it,

failing even in the last stages of clinical trials. So the pharmaceutical industry story goes,

they must be rewarded with patent protections and the ability to charge high prices

for life-saving medications. But what if that simple parable of risk, reward, incentive is not the whole story?

Our guest this morning, Priti Christel, just won a MacArthur for her work trying to reform the way that the patent office deals with new medicines as a way to drive down the cost of drugs.
