When Apple nicks the Macbook White for Education last week, I really thought the two options for K-12 going forward would be either the 11-inch Macbook air or the iPad.

Seemed to make sense until Apple out at a third option made specifically for the education market.

The unofficial Apple Weblog says Apple has replaced the 13 inch white Macbook with a special 13 inch

Macbook air for the same $999 as the machine it

replaces. It's also the same price as the 11 inch Macbook air and shares most of

the smaller machine's specs including a 1.6 gigahertz

Intel core I-5 processor, 2 gigabytes of non-upgradable RAM, and a built-in 64

gigabyte flash drive. The screen is the big difference between the two machines,

with the education-only unit sporting a screen that's both larger and of a higher resolution.

Well that's one big difference. The other is the new machine will only be available for or through educational institutions.

So replacing the Macbook White with a special Macbook air seems a little surprising,

especially considering the push people expect for the iPad in education,

what with I books, textbooks, I books author, and the iTunes U app for the iPad.

But if they're going to keep an education laptop
