Hello and welcome to the Zero Definals podcast.

If you want to follow along with written notes on this topic, you can follow along at

0:14.7

zero definals.com slash lung function tests or in the respiratory section of the zero to finals medicine book.

0:23.1

Let's get straight into it.

0:25.2

Lung function tests are used to help establish a diagnosis of lung disease

0:29.8

and they're particularly helpful when looking at obstructive or restrictive lung disease

0:35.5

where there are recognisable findings on these tests to help guide the

0:40.3

diagnosis. And this section is designed to give a simplified overview of lung function tests,

0:46.8

and there's a lot more to learn if you're interested and want to dive a bit deeper. So let's talk about

0:52.3

some of the basic outcome measures of lung function tests.

0:56.6

Spirometry is a test that's used to establish objective measures of lung function,

1:01.3

and it involves different breathing exercises that are done into a machine that measures the

1:07.4

volumes of air that's passing through it and the flow rates

1:10.9

and then produces a report.

1:14.3

Reversibility testing involves using a bronchodilator such as salbutamol

1:19.2

prior to repeating the spirometry test to see what impact the bronchidilator has on the results of the test.

1:27.1

The first outcome measure to talk about is FEV1.

1:31.8

And FEV1 means forced expiratory volume in one second.

1:37.0

And this is basically the amount of air a person can exhale as fast as they can in one second.

1:43.0

And this is a measure of the ability of the air to freely flow out of the lungs.

1:48.5
