But there's one case that stands out on the police blotter. It was reported by the

owner of a small pet shop on 8th Avenue in 37th Street. This guy came in and asked for a dozen goldfish

in a bowl, he reported. When I gave them to him, he threw the bowl on the floor, got down on his

hands and knees, and ate every one of the fish alive. Then he gulped the broken glass bowl down piece by piece.

I just couldn't believe my eyes.

The police shrugged it off as a crank call.

But when it happened again and again at various pet shops throughout the city,

they decided that there must be some truth to it.
