Lou Elbano had been telling a lot of weird tales about his new discovery.

Knowing how Albano exaggerates, nobody believed him.

But when he unveiled Moondog Main to eastern audiences, it seemed Albano's stories were true.

There are a lot of weird people in a big city like New York.

A romp down, any of its Midtown streets will find you stopping to gaze and amazement at religious freaks, junkies, hobos, and pornography shop browsers.

The police department is used to receiving reports about weirdos 24 hours a day.

But there's one case that stands out on the police blotter. It was reported by the

owner of a small pet shop on 8th Avenue in 37th Street. This guy came in and asked for a dozen goldfish

in a bowl, he reported. When I gave them to him, he threw the bowl on the floor, got down on his

hands and knees, and ate every one of the fish alive. Then he gulped the broken glass bowl down piece by piece.

I just couldn't believe my eyes.

The police shrugged it off as a crank call.

But when it happened again and again at various pet shops throughout the city,

they decided that there must be some truth to it.

So they staked out several pet shops in the area for a week or so.

Four days went by.

Nothing.

Then on the 5th, a Monday night, it happened.

A cop posing at a store clerk was ordered by a customer to get him a dozen goldfish in a glass bowl.
