Summary

This podcast tells the tragic story of the Steiner family from France who visited White Sands National Park in New Mexico during August 2015, starting a challenging desert hike at noon in 101-degree heat with only two small water bottles despite park warnings recommending a gallon per person. Both parents died of heat stroke after splitting up on the trail, but their decision to ration their limited water by giving their 9-year-old son double portions of every sip ultimately saved his life, making him the sole survivor of what was meant to be their dream American vacation.

Hennyson. And we are medical professionals with a passion for wilderness survival. Join us as we

explore real life survival stories and the critical moments

that determine their outcomes. Buckle up. Adventure awaits. Let's dive into this week's story.

Today we're headed to White Sands National Park in New Mexico. There are places on Earth that

0:36.4

looks so beautiful, so otherworldly, that they

0:39.5

trick you into forgetting that they can kill you. White Sands National Park in New Mexico

0:44.6

is one of those places. Before we get started, a shout out to Twyla Burke Holder, a listener

who suggested this story for us. Thanks, Twyla. This is a good one. We appreciate your

contribution. Thanks, Twyla. Picture this. Endless rolling dunes of snow, white sand, stretching to the

1:04.0

horizon. So bright, they hurt your eyes, even through sunglasses. It's like stepping onto another planet, which is probably why NASA has used this area as a training ground for astronauts.

1:16.6

Wait, hold on, snow white sand.

1:19.1

I'm picturing what actual snow looks like, but obviously that can't be right in New Mexico in August.

1:25.4

No, you're right, Casey.

1:26.5

No snow at all. These dunes are made of

1:29.2

gypsum crystals, which are ground down over thousands of years to the finest, whitest sand you've

1:36.7

ever seen. And on a summer day in August, when the sun is beating down, those beautiful

1:42.4

white dunes can basically become a furnace. The sand reflects

1:46.5

the heat back at you from below, while the sun hammers you from above. There's no shade, no trees,

1:52.4

no shelter. Just you, the blazing sun, and about 275 square miles of what locals call the world's largest sandbox. It was here on August 4,

2:06.0

2015, that a French family's dream vacation became something else entirely. A French family in

2:14.2

New Mexico? That is quite a journey. What's their story?
