1:00.5	Tonight, we are going to delve into archaeology and explore the ancient Maya cities hidden in the tropical forest of Central America.
1:08.4	You've likely heard about the Maya as a pre-Columbian civilization in Central America. You've likely heard about the Maya as a pre-Columbian civilization in Central
1:14.2	America, similar to the Aztecs or the Incas in South America. However, unlike these,
1:23.8	the Maya were not a single kingdom or a state. They were a civilization that lasted much longer and unified different peoples.
1:34.3	When the Spanish arrived in America and began conquering Mexico,
1:40.3	the Maya had already declined centuries before as a civilization.
1:47.4	Their descendants were still there, even though the cities they had built were sometimes forgotten,
1:55.6	hidden under the jungle that had overtaken them, sometimes erasing them from memory.
2:02.8	But the level of refinement that the Maya had achieved, several centuries earlier, was rediscovered,
2:11.5	especially in the 19th century. Their knowledge of mathematics and astronomy, their art, their architecture, and what we can
2:23.2	know or suppose about their vision of the world, all of these are fascinating and impressive.
2:32.2	Tonight we are going to explore this and in more detail. We will visit various
