Summary

In this episode Lori and Kerry discuss the trips the Savior, His Apostles, and the Seventy take, and lessons from that trip. In particular they focus on the story of Mary and Martha and the needful thing of coming to Christ. They explore different lessons that can be taken from that experience, especially in light of all that leads up to it, and different ways it can apply to our lives. We are grateful for our sponsor, Lisa Spice, and for Alexia Muhlestein, who edited the episode, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

I'm your host, Kerry Mealstein, and I'm so excited to have with me a returning guest, my friend Lori Denning. Welcome, Lori. Hi. Hi, Carrie. I feel welcome. Thank you. It's good to be back. Good to have you. Lori was with us. I think it was like Luke 2 or Mark. Yeah, exactly. on a camera anyway at the beginning. And Lori is working on a degree at Claremont in, well, all sorts of things, but in particular, some New Testament scripture studies. And I'll let her explain that and other things about you. What else should we know about you? Okay. Well, thanks, Carrie. Everybody. Yeah, I'm back. I am finishing my PhD. I'm in my second year of coursework. I'm at Claremont,

0:58.5

which has a great program in religion. I focus on ancient scripture, which they have a fancy

1:04.4

name, critical comparative scripture. So I do ancient scripture. So we, that's, you know,

1:09.7

New Testament and Old Testament. And yeah, so I get to study right now. I'm doing a bunch in the Old Testament right now today and a little bit in second and fourth century Christianity. So, so yeah, like nerd. It's like a nerd haven for people to talk about that stuff all day.

1:27.4

We'll tell Claremont, that's what they should change the name of their program to, nerd haven for people to talk about that stuff all day. We'll tell Claire that's what they should

1:28.9

change the name of their program to. Nerd Haven is what they should call it. That's exactly right.

1:33.5

They'll be happy to hear it. Yeah. Yeah. It's a blessing to sit and be able to really delve into the

1:39.0

scriptures with a group of scholars and read them together and just ask questions about them and kind of tear them

1:45.3

apart and see what you can learn. And so there's some pretty smart people down there. So I was just

1:50.2

not a lot. That sounds great. But yeah, I have loved it. Actually, I've loved it. So it's a blessing.

1:57.1

I'm glad. Fantastic stuff. Just good fun. Yeah, who doesn't love reading in the original text or whatever. But yeah, we read some obscure texts as well, some of the Gnostic texts and stuff. Yeah. So it's been, it's been great. I think what's really a benefit is kind of, I think, the idea of taking something from a

2:20.4

different perspective and looking at it from a fresh perspective again. I mean, we've all grown up

2:25.1

with the scriptures for a long time, typically, so we've heard some of the same things. So just to look at it

2:29.0

from a new new perspective, new vision, new idea, certainly application is fun. So so it's a it's a blessing that you

2:38.0

get to spend your time doing that so yeah i'm i'm no kerry mulestein though carry i i

2:43.6

told you last time you're one of my world does not need any more carry mulessteins that's

2:48.8

that's that's that's trouble no no no we need no, no. We need some Lori Dennings and some

2:53.5

We do. We need we need a lot of me. Yeah, that's right. I'm a lot of me now. So thanks. No, it was great. So we did. It was a few months ago and we talked about the beginning of the gospel. So we're back in kind of Luke today. I guess I'm the

3:07.8

Luke person somehow. I've become the Lucan scholar. There you go. And I think you're going to take us
