Summary

This week, Jarlath is honoured to be joined by Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu. This episode is part of Irishman Abroad’s continued effort to raise awareness of the mental health challenges facing young people and our chosen charity partner jigsaw.ie.  Hazel explains how she and her family were on the devastating receiving end of racism as the only Chinese family in Celbridge (11:00) when she was growing up and why she would refuse to shake the hand of Donald Trump if she was given the opportunity to do so (42:00).   In this conversation, which covers a wide range of crucial talking points, Hazel admits that the recent Mother and Babies Home Bill was not handled well at all (51:00) while also outlining her own experience with anxiety and depression as well as her thoughts on the wider mental health difficulties for Ireland's youth during the pandemic (5:00). This is just a taster. And that's all important, but behind that is a story of tireless work to become the first person in her family to attend

Despite that, she faces torrents of abuse online on a daily basis simply for looking the way

0:40.2

she looks and her heritage this week it reached ahead with an incident that I

0:45.6

won't even dignify by repeating here but needless to say all of this takes a

toll on a person's mental health I approached the Lord Mayor because of that,

0:57.0

and because many moons ago we briefly worked in student politics together. She is my friend

1:04.0

and someone of immense mental strength. I also wanted to put this conversation together with her because I specifically want to point people in the direction of our chosen charity partner, jigsaw.e.

1:17.7

An Irish mental health charity unlike any other in that they offer online services specifically for young people.

1:26.5

You can of course ring up with their other services,

1:30.5

but their online services, there's no referral and people can speak to somebody straight away,

which we all know is crucial. They also have locations across the country in Cork, Dunnigall,

1:43.5

Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Leish, Offley, Limerick,

Me, the Ruscommon. Jigsaw is incredible, but their online service is accessible across the whole country

1:55.0

at all times and I love that and they need us to spread, of course, and they need our help to keep going.

So why not pop over there and have a look at jigsaw.e this week or maybe stick a tenor in there

2:08.2

to help them deal with the influx of COVID-related issues that they're obviously seeing at the moment.

2:14.8

This is, of course, just a snippet of my conversation with Hazel Tew to hear the

full thing, including why she wouldn't shake the hand of Donald Trump and her thoughts on the

controversial decision to seal the records of mother and baby homes in Ireland. Pop over to Patreon and
