And the Yeah, Hello everyone this is your host John Hagadorn and and welcome back to 1001 classic short stories and tales and a brand new year in 2020.

0:37.0

Thanks to all of you for sharing our show, for reviewing our show, and for being there with us in these past five years.

0:44.1

It's been a wonderful, wonderful trip and we keep discovering new writers, new authors, and

0:49.4

great stories.

0:51.3

I thought we'd start off 2020 with a real adventure from H writer-Haggard called

0:56.5

Long Odds. The story which is narrated in the following pages came to me from the lips of my old friend

1:05.4

Alan Quartermain or Hunter Quartermain as we used to call him in South Africa.

1:11.0

1:55.5

One letter only have I received from the old gentleman dated from a mission station high

1:59.8

up in the Tana, a river on the east coast about 300 miles north of Zanzibar. In it he says that

2:07.4

they've gone through many hardships and adventures but are alive and well and have

2:11.9

found traces which go far toward making him hope that the results of their wild

2:15.4

quest may be a magnificent and unexampled discovery.

2:19.7

I greatly fear, however, that all he has discovered discovered is death for this letter came a long

2:24.5

while ago and no one has heard a single word of the party since they have totally vanished.
