editorial board of the Wall Street Journal. He's in London and therefore he's my eyes on the scene

of life in London now that it is August. August is associated with revolutions, with world wars,

with surprises in the markets, with generally things that you hadn't counted on, not quite black

swan but near to in that direction. However, this year, because this is the first full summer

without the pandemic, there's evidence in Italy because I talk to it. Is Italy an evidence in

Berlin because I talk to it? There's certainly evidence in South of France that Europeans are

moving around. They're enjoying themselves, especially in the month of August. Is that true in

London? And here's the hard question to answer. Joe, can you get a seat at a restaurant that says

that waiting line is six months to a year? Is London is London moved empty enough for that?

Well, I haven't tried to book any of the exclusive restaurants recently, but there is definitely

a sense that London is emptying out for the August vacation season I've had. At least one person

commented to me that it didn't used to be like this. This is sort of an example of the French

vacation of British culture where the the Brits are adopting this European habit of taking off for

most of the month of August. But I think definitely the schools are into their vacation period now.

There's evidence of a huge uptick in travel. And so I think people are going and it's interesting

that the demand for travel still is there, even though the prices are pretty high. And I think

it's because people are still working through this pent-up demand that happened during the pandemic.
