Here is Civil War, the American Civil War.

Germanicus, my measure of civil wars has to do with us being Romans.

It's my reading of history of Julius Caesar that Caesar introduced Civil War into a city that

was already frightened of it because of the previous 50 years.

Caesar knew what he was doing and knew that if he was bold enough, there's never

Caesar's idea was he could never be too bold.

Bold enough, he could bring together the Roman republic, the senators who would treat him as

a super senator. He wasn't seeing himself as king. However, setting that aside, the Civil War

that followed was a catastrophe for everyone.

And it's my measure of why Augustus was successful, Octavian, is that no matter the enmity between

the senators, the equestrians, the equist class, everybody who had suffered in the war,

the families, the losses, the disappearances, no matter who you were, you resolved after that

that we must never do this again. That Civil War almost wrecked the wonder that was Rome.

That's what they learned in the first part of the first century AD.
