This is the Friends of History Debating Society. I am Gaius. Germanicus is here and we're

going to speak of a moment that is the low point of the first century AD, the

defeat of the Roman legions in the Tudorburg forest by an ambush they should

have seen coming.

What happened, Germanicus?

The Germans were essentially occupied by the Romans.

Some time after Julius Caesar subdued, the Golaz, the Romans were able to cross the Rhine

and pull in a whole bunch of tribes, not all of them, but many of them.

The Marsers, the Ucy Peters, the Sughambrair, the Chatin, the Cham-Maven, it's quite a list. And those tribes were divided and that's how the Romans

were able to assert a rule all the way up to the Elba River in fact.

But the German tribes chafed under Roman rule and were united by a single man, Herman,

who was called Arminius by the Romans, he'd been raised as a Roman. Went back to Germany and I guess with

what he learned from the Romans was able to rouse a briefly unified cluster of German tribes then took on the Roman legions that were

garrisoning Germany and the leader Varus, the general in command of Roman

forces in Germany proceeded rather stupidly and blindly to head into a forested area

chasing after the Germans and they ambushed.

Three Roman legions reduced to nothing by Arminius and the Germans.

9 AD.

1,921. 924 years later.

This is wonderful.

Jomaticus and I entertain ourselves by reading about the catastrophes of the 20th century,

build up to the 21st century where we can't see any farther than now.
