0:18.0	Today we're looking at the shortest book in the New Testament. It's a letter and in the original language which was Greek,
0:21.0	this letter is only 219 words.
0:24.6	That means it's actually shorter than most chapters in the New Testament.
0:28.6	After all, it's hard to say a lot in so few words.
0:32.3	In some ways, it's actually the most everyday normal thing
0:35.2	that we have in the New Testament. I say that because most letters in the ancient
0:39.8	world were short just like this one, short and simple. You may not realize it, but most of the letters in the New Testament are very strange.
0:48.0	They're some of the longest letters that we have from the ancient world.
0:52.0	So I'm grateful that we have this short letter. It's an ordinary slice of life from the early
0:57.6	church. In this letter you'll see that John who calls himself the elder
1:01.8	that he's applying many of the themes we've already
1:05.2	explored in First and Second John.
1:07.7	He talks about love, righteousness, and false teaching.
1:11.4	And so this letter is a simple, real world,
1:13.9	pastoral application of the sermon recorded in 1st John.
1:18.7	This is what love lived out in the church really looks like.
1:22.7	And as you'll see, it's not entirely a rosy picture.
1:26.2	Church life is messy, but it's a messiness that you've been called into.
