I was verily holding my breath in my hands.

So wrote Daniel Child,

Minuteman of Lincoln, Massachusetts,

who fought in the Concord fight with his brother, his kin, and his neighbors.

Child was hiding behind a rock with musket fire whisking by him from all sides.

He had sought the rock after literally running between musket balls to get to a safe place.

Child, who was in the business of harassing the king's troops today as they moved from

Concord back to Boston, giving him an old Yankee welcome that they'd remember, along

what would be a bloody road, found himself literally caught between a group of British troops

marching down the road, and a group of flankers,

smaller detachments sent out by the main body to keep people like him away.

He was between these two groups.

And for a second, what must have been an adrenaline fuel second, he was on the safest place on earth. Neither of the British

troops could fire at him because they were too close to each other. They would hit each other.
