On this episode of Gun Talk Hunt, I'm talking predator control. I recently took a trip to go hunt some predators on my property and we had some good luck, we had some bad luck, and you're going to hear it all right here, and if you really want to get involved, head over to watch our video on social media because you're going to see some photos and videos from the trip.

Welcome in Gun Talk Hunt fans, I'm your host KJ, and I'm all by my loansome today, and that's just fine with me because we're talking about predators today, the four-legged kind.

0:34.0

That's what we're talking about today, and we're talking about predator control, why it's important and a couple of lessons that I've learned over the past month that make me appreciate hunting out west a little bit more.

0:47.0

But before I dive into that, Gun Talk Hunt is brought to you by lockdown, secure your lifestyle, silence or central, silence delivered, savage arms, chimney triggers, the world's finest triggers, and Brown Hills, serious about firearms since 1939.

1:03.0

So I put on a little hunt for me and a buddy, Matt Rice, he's been on the show before.

1:11.0

Actually, he was on the show back in, I think it was back in January, he was on the show, and we planned to get together and take a little hunt.

1:21.0

We were wanting to go push some quail around and hunt for some coyotes.

1:28.0

Well, Bobcat season was gone, and Matt and I are sitting there talking about it, and we're like, well, I've got a lot of property out in Western Oklahoma, so let's just meet out there.

1:38.0

We're going to go through predator control on my property because every year, undoubtedly, I passed up five coyotes this year, and why did I do that?

1:48.0

Because it should be automatic, you see a coyote, you shoot a coyote. But when you're deer hunting, you really kind of want to like use those rounds in that racket for deer hunting purposes.

2:00.0

And on this particular property, it's, I would say you're looking at a little over 2000 acres, and the numbers of deer have dwindled while the predators have increased.

2:14.0

So we were just going to do a little hunt out there, and it didn't quite end up how we thought it would.

2:21.0

You know, we got out there, we had planned for the week before, then we were like, all right, Ryan's going to join us.

2:27.0

Ryan Gresham of gun talk was going to join us, and then he couldn't make it so we were kind of locked into the days that we had kind of shifted around, not blaming you, Ryan, but you're the reason why our hunt went south, I think.

2:40.0

But the weather warmed up, and I really kind of want to focus a little bit of this talk on what do you do when the weather warms up, and coyotes aren't showing themselves, what do your sets need to look like, and especially on warm days with light winds and warm days with high winds, what do you do, what is your move need to look like, what is your calling setup need to look like, and I'm going to jump into that.

3:07.0

But predator control for you guys, I know there's there's some guys out there that just don't do a lot of it, it will help enhance your property.

3:17.0

Now, there's going to always be predators around if there's wild game to be had, there's going to be predators. It's just a simple fact of life, you know, and we're getting into that breeding season right now, and coyotes, you know, they're on the move.

3:31.0

You know, cooler weather up north, time to hunt coyotes, man, that's just what you think about. But so I was hunting, I guess I should tell you what I was hunting with.

3:43.0

I typically prefer either a 204 22250 22250 is by far my favorite by far my favorite gun to use.

3:54.0

For I honestly have shot a lot of white tails with a 22250 and state variations like make sure you check your state regulations, because you know, it might not be a caliber that you can use for deer.

4:07.0

But I can place that around wherever I want, and it doesn't damage the belt on the coyote, which is, you know, you want to, you want to utilize that animal to the best of its ability, if especially if the hide is awesome.

4:23.0

But, but predator control, I would say I saw a statistic the other day and it kind of alarmed me for every, you know, for every one coyote that you have to think about them taking out up to 12 fawns a year.
