| 0:00.0 | Well, howdy there internet people? It's about again. So today we are going to talk about math, |
| 0:06.0 | Republican math and Democratic math and the budget. And we're going to talk about two percentage numbers they keep showing up |
| 0:15.4 | 22% and 1% and we're going to talk about why at this point |
| 0:21.8 | Republicans and Democrats are two people separated by common |
| 0:25.3 | language. Okay so I had a whole bunch of questions about the 22% number and I had somebody ask of the |
| 0:35.0 | one percent number and I had somebody ask how a 1% increase is a cut |
| 0:39.0 | when they're talking about McCarthy's budget plan. So what we're going to do is we're |
| 0:46.7 | going to go through, explain where the 22% number comes from and then we're going |
| 0:50.0 | to talk about the Republican increase which if you don't know if you exist in a right-wing |
| 0:57.0 | echo chamber, you have probably never heard of the Okay, so what is the plan? The first part of the plan is to set the budget for |
| 1:19.8 | fiscal year 2024 at the same level as fiscal year |
| 1:25.0 | 2022. That is 1.471 trillion dollars. |
| 1:30.0 | That's the plan. |
| 1:32.0 | That's the plan. Now they have promised |
| 1:36.3 | repeatedly they are not cutting defense spending at all. Assume they're telling the truth. Fiscal year 2023 defense spending. 885 billion |
| 1:50.4 | dollars more or less. You can get different numbers depending on how you |
| 1:54.5 | factor this, but it doesn't change the end result really. So you take that 885 billion and you subtract it from the $1.471 trillion. What do you have left for |
| 2:07.5 | non-defense spending? $586 billion. Okay? Now you have to look at current non-defense spending which is 756 |
| 2:19.4 | billion. So if you're spending 756 now and you're going to start spending 586, what do you have a |
| 2:28.1 | 22% reduction across the board? That's where the number comes from. |
| 2:35.0 | Okay, so now let's go to the 1% increase. First, it doesn't guarantee a 1% increase a year. It caps it at 1%. |
| 2:48.6 | And there are some people in the Democratic Party and liberal commentators who have said, well, that's actually a cut. |
