Summary

Ten days. Six bags. One baby screaming about her missing keys, her cell phone and how much she hates shoes and pants. Spring break in Vegas, Zion and Bryce had it all—drunk fairy godmothers in Vegas, kids veering dangerously close to canyon edges, and a toddler who staged daily protests against wearing pants. These are our lessons learned and a survival guide to chaotic family travel: overpacking regrets, road trip rules, the underrated joy of traveling with another family that you love so damn much, and the parenting power of well-timed candy bribes. Also: how to carry a baby for miles while singing a made-up unicorn song on repeat. Join our newsletter community here. Pre-order EVERYONE IS LYING TO YOU here. Visit our lovely sponsors here. We just got back from spring break.

Ten days with our kids, two national parks, 24 hours in Las Vegas, and I learned a lot of lessons.

To talk about them, I am bringing on none other than my husband, the one, the only, Nick Aster.

0:26.7

Hi, Nick.

Hello.

Thanks for letting me sleep in this morning.

0:30.9

Well, my pleasure.

So, we just got back from our spring break trip, and I I think we learned a lot. I will say though,

0:39.2

I think that the trip was 80% awesome, which is a very good percentage when it comes to

traveling with children. I'm going with 80 or 90 even. I mean, it was pretty darn good. The lows are

0:50.1

short, if notable. Well, I also got a text message from Casey, who was on the trip with us,

0:56.6

who just said, I miss you guys, and that was an amazing fucking spring break. So I think that's a,

1:02.8

that's a good measure. It's a measure of a good trip. But I will say, first of all,

1:07.5

we are terrible packers, and we completely overpacked for this trip. I will take

1:12.4

anyone's advice on how to pack better for a family vacation, because how many bags did we have?

1:18.8

We had six bags, although in our defense, a couple of them were the little kids' bags,

1:23.8

so they weren't that big, but nonetheless excessive. Well, and our kids roll their own bags most of the time, which is great, or at least the

five-year-old and the seven-year-old do.

1:33.0

But, yeah, we probably could have done with, I would say, half of what we packed, especially

1:39.7

because we had an Airbnb, so we had laundry for more than half the trip, which is not nothing.

1:47.0

Okay, we really, we could have shut a lot of bags because it was a disaster when we got to
