0:10.0	I'm Keith Simon. I'm Tanya Wilmoth. And I'm Patrick Miller. We're in the middle of our Christmas
0:15.5	series right now. We're exploring the stories around Jesus's birth and the prophecies
0:20.1	pointing forward to it. We have a spiritual adversary, a spiritual enemy. First
0:28.5	Peter 58 says be self-controlled and alert. In other words, be watchful, be on guard, keep your eyes open.
0:37.0	Why? Well, it goes on to say, your enemy, the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
0:47.4	The word devil literally means adversary.
0:50.8	And so what we're told is that our adversary is prowling around, sneaking up on people,
0:57.8	kind of like a roaring lion would stalk its prey.
1:02.1	And our adversary is looking for someone to devour, and that someone might be us,
1:08.9	unless we are self-controlled and alert like Peter warns us to be.
1:14.5	So the biblical reality that we have an adversary that wishes to do us harm
1:19.9	is lingering in the background of 1st King's chapter 11.
1:25.0	So a quick refresher in case you got lost in the story.
1:28.0	God installed Solomon as King after his father David dies.
1:33.0	Solomon asks God for wisdom,
1:36.0	and God grants wisdom and wealth and other blessings too.
1:40.0	Solomon develops into a great leader
1:42.0	who builds the temple and a palace, but after a while his heart
1:47.1	turns to worship idols instead of God. Now up to that point God had been putting choices in front of Solomon and telling him
1:56.4	the consequences of the choices he'd make. He kept saying to Solomon, look,
2:02.1	choose to submit to the Lord.
