Summary

Don breaks down the explosive reporting on the Venezuelan boat strikes and the allegation that Pete Hegseth may have ordered that everyone on those vessels be killed. If true, national security experts are already calling it what it is: a war crime. Donald Trump now claims he did not know about the order, but that excuse raises even more questions. How can a commander in chief distance himself from a military-style operation carried out under his watch? And if he truly didn’t know… what does that say about who is actually in charge? Don digs into the timeline, the denials, the shifting narratives, and the growing calls for accountability. Is it time for Trump to fire Hegseth? And will he, or will politics once again outweigh basic responsibility? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I want to begin with an interview that really stopped me in my tracks because it's not every day that you hear a retired commanding general of the United States

0:22.3

Army speak the way that General Mark Hurtling spoke. It was a fascinating interview. And when a man

0:27.7

like that chooses his words carefully, when he slows down, when he takes a moment, takes a time,

0:32.2

and he lifts his eyebrows, you know, just a little. If you watch him, he's a very moderated guy

0:36.4

all the time. but he was particularly

0:38.3

moderated on this interview when he says that what happened he believes in September on those boats

0:47.3

in Venezuela and in the waters there, that it was illegal, that it was a moral, that it is dangerous.

0:52.3

You see the weight of his career behind him and a career behind it.

And you see a man who has commanded soldiers in life and death situations, he even talks,

you know, in this interview about some of the situations that he's been in,

1:06.0

a man who has taught the law of armed conflict and a man who understands not just what war is,

1:14.2

but what war requires.

1:16.6

Here's General Hurling.

1:17.6

Not a lawyer, but I will tell you that if a senior official urged someone else, a military

1:26.1

person, to conduct such a strike, then we are morally bound to ask

1:32.1

additional questions that any democracy should be asking. Were these unlawful orders, it

1:38.9

appears they were, were they issued or were they implied? We don't know that. That's part of an investigation.

1:46.0

Did the service member feel pressured to act unlawfully?

1:50.0

We don't know that either.

1:51.0

Were there the attempts to suppress the supporting?

1:55.0

Was additional guidance provided?

1:57.0

These aren't political questions, Joe's.
