Summary

Like all things this season, even when the Lakers have something to celebrate, it's complicated, and comes with caveats. To wit, on the surface, a 106-101 win over a (then) 36-21 Utah Jazz squad that entered the contest on a six-game winning streak would be a reason for unbridled glee, yes? Yes??? Well, not so much, since the victory was so noteworthy in part because Anthony Davis exited in the first half with a severely rolled ankle, and may have left the building on crutches. How much time he'll miss remains to be seen, but an absence feels like a given, and considering the Lakers are already fighting an uphill battle for seeding, this will only make matters more difficult. However, it's also complicated because the win was nonetheless quite impressive, as the Lakers showed a ton of resolve (not always the case this year), and came back from behind while competing under difficult circumstances, tactically and mentally. LeBron James fueled the comeback with a massive fourth quarter, and there were big contributions from Austin Reaves, Malik Monk, and Russell Westbrook, who's been playing much better in general of late. What does it all mean moving forward? Who knows? But if you're looking for reasons to be ever so cautiously optimistic, this could qualify.
