When briefed about the invasion plans for the 131 square mile island of Grenada,

President Reagan told the briefer double the number of troops. When the briefer asked why,

President Reagan said if Carter would have sent 18 helicopters to get hostages instead of

nine, he would have been briefing you instead of me. Oh, political whatefs about the 1980 election it's tempting to

disagree with Reagan's backward look at the politics of 1980 and whether he would have indeed lost

just because Carter rescued the hostage.

Just putting that aside, it was a lesson that Reagan had learned about military force the hard way in Lebanon.

In Lebanon, we have some 1,600 Marines, part of a multinational force that's trying to help the people

of Lebanon restore order and stability to that

troubled land.

Our Marines are assigned to the south of the city of Beirut, near the only airport operating

in Lebanon.

Just a mile or so to the north is the Italian

contingent and not far from them the French and a company of British soldiers.

The series of events that would lead President Reagan to send troops into Lebanon, it's not hard to describe.
