So, Sergeant Bill, part of criminology, of course, is victimology.

And what we know about that topic and study is there are three levels or areas,

primary, secondary, tertiary.

Primary victimization, of course, is unfortunately, sadly, tragically,

the direct recipient of the crime and certainly in this

tragedy, Zana, Ethan, Maddie Cayley. Secondary victimization, of course, now becomes the family

members, the loved ones who have to deal with the pain, suffering, and trauma. And then tertiary really is the rest of us,

meaning we may not know these family members directly, but we are just so shocked and sickened

and saddened by this that it affects us as well. And something else, of course, regarding murder and death,

particularly is the manner in which people grieve depending upon who the victim is.

So in other words, if we lose a parent, we understand that as our connection to our past.

That's our history. The loss of a spouse, our connection to our past. That's our history.

The loss of a spouse, our connection to the present, the person with whom we interact daily,

but the children, the death of a child, and particularly the murder, that is our connection

to the future.

And many forensic psychologists believe that that is the most difficult

loss of all, the loss of the child.
