Welcome to episode 406 with my guest, Jessica McCabe. My name is Paul Gilmarten. This is the

0:08.2

Metal Illness Happy Hour. It's a place for honesty about all the battles in our heads from

0:13.8

medically diagnosed conditions, past traumas, and sexual dysfunction to everyday compulsive

0:20.0

negative thinking. This shows not meant to be a substitute for professional metal counseling.

I'm not a therapist. It's not a doctor's office. It's more like a waiting room. It doesn't suck.

Interesting week. I found out I have to have surgery on my elbow, which totally

0:48.0

fucking blows because I'm going to be able to do my three favorite things. Woodwork, play hockey,

0:54.4

or play guitar. I guess the recovery is going to be at least three months and I don't even have

1:01.7

a surgery date set yet, but I'm hopeful that it will get rid of the pain in my elbow.

1:13.2

I think this will be maybe my 13th surgery. Not on my elbow, but just in general surgeries. I've

1:20.6

had my entire life. I'm pretty familiar with the inside of a hospital, but I

1:31.1

trouble asking for help. My first thought was I'm only going to have the use of one arm because

1:38.6

for the first three weeks, your arm is in a sling and you can't sleep on your side.

1:46.1

You have to sleep sitting up like Dracula. Maybe I'll wear some fangs. I'll avoid daylight

1:53.7

and I'll talk in the Romanian accent. I'm thinking to myself, and I've had shoulder surgeries

2:03.6

before where my arm was in a sling for a couple of weeks, but I was living with my then wife.

2:12.0

And so if I needed a jar open or something like that, I could ask for help, but I live by myself now.

2:20.8

And I'm just like, oh, am I going to be able to do everything? I'm so afraid of being an inconvenience

2:30.0

to somebody. And I was talking to my girlfriend, Christina. And she was like, well, I'll come over

2:41.5

and help you. And I didn't want to inconvenience her because I live completely the opposite direction

2:49.6

of where she lives between her and her workplace. So she would have to go way out of her way.
