comedy with Sam Adams. Hello, Sam Adams. Hello. You are a senior editor at Slate. I am. Thank you

for coming in to discuss late night with me. And on the phone from the Bay Area, we have Ingu Kang, another Slate Culture writer. Hi, Ingu. Hi. You and I have already talked a little bit about late night on a podcast because we covered it on the last Slate Culture Gab Fest, but we have not gotten to spoil. We haven't gotten to really dig deep into the plot and details of stuff that happens in the last third. So I'm looking forward to

spoiling with you. Let's get into that muck. All right. So I feel like everybody must know

the basic premise of late night because it's on every bus stop. But shall we set it up briefly?

As we begin late night, who is Mindy Kaling's character and what does she seek? This is like a screenwriting

class. Who is she and what does she want, Sam? Mindy Kaling is Molly Patel, who is sort of an aspiring

comedy writer who isn't really made any particular steps in that direction. Her main qualification

is kind of cracking jokes at the chemical plant where she works. But she's a big fan of Catherine Newberry, who is a talk show host played by Emma Thompson,

who's been on the air for 30 years, kind of a highbrow network talk show host,

if that such a thing as possible.
